Weight Loss
I’m trying to lose weight again. And succeeding.

See the Blog for notes on my progress. My official goal is 169, and I’ll certainly try for that. But the big milestones I’m shooting for in this latest attempt at losing weight are:
- Weigh less than 300 pounds
by Christmasbefore next Newfoundland visit. - Weigh less than 200 pounds overall.
My first attempt at serious weight loss was from June 2000 to July of 2001. I lost a little over 100 pounds, but was unable to cross the 300 lb barrier. I’m hoping this time to adequately supplement my changed eating habits with increased physical activity, which was my downfall last time.
Specific changes I’ve taken to change my inherently sedentary lifestyle:
- As often as possible, I walk for at least 40 minutes each morning when I wake up. In April, I had been acheiving about 3 times a week. As of June, I was doing 3 miles every weekday morning, and between 4 and 5 miles on the weekend days. This proved hard to continue when the weather got hot, so I joined a gym. I’m currently going once a day during the week. Weekends workouts I’ll try to fit in as well. As of the end of July, my typical workout is 3 miles on a treadmill at 2.5-3 MPH, depending on my mood and energy level, followed by 2-5 miles on a bike (recumbent or upright). Instead of the mornings, I either go over my lunch break or after work, depending on if I’m carpooling or not.
- I switched to using a standing desk at work. I now stand for around 7 hours a day (I have a couch, too, which I use from time to time). This results in me often pacing about behind my desk, shifting from leg to leg, dancing around to music, etc.
- As often as I think of it, I leave my office and walk around the building. I try to do this once per hour.
- I park far away from wherever I’m going. In the hot summer days, or when it’s raining, this isn’t very much fun. So instead, I park in the lot on the opposite side of the building from where I work. I get a long walk to my desk, but most of it is confortably indoors.
