Apple broke Front Row
Yesterday, I upgraded to iTunes 7.2 across all my Macs to take advantage of the higher bitrate ITMS songs. Things seemed to go smoothly, until I tried to sync with my iPod and got hit by this bug.
I worked past that and moved on. But today, I learned another gotcha. I use a Mac Mini on my TV instead of an Apple TV because it’s more functional and better suited to my needs. I keep my digital video content on my iMac in my home office, and stream it over the net via Front Row to my Mini using fast ethernet (100mbps). Works spiffy since all the iTunes sharing stuff Just Works.
Until this morning, that is, when I discovered this bug.
Further testing has shown that iTunes is perfectly happy to play shared music and video content. And Front Row will play the shared music library without issue. However, shared video content kicks out an error in Front Row. Nothing, including video podcasts, imported video, and even video purchased from ITMS will play from a shared library. Only local video content or streamed movie trailers will work.
I hope this gets fixed soon, it’s pretty annoying.
