Best Phishing Attempt Ever

Stace | Easily Amused, Stuff | Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

These days, I’ve noticed Phishing attempts are getting more and more sophisticated. Once, I was almost fooled, it was so convincing. But then something like this happens, and it makes me laugh, both at the incredible stupidity of the person perpetrating it, and even more at the idiots who fall for it.

Weight Loss Update

Stace | Weight Loss | Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

3.8 pounds this week.  I didn’t work out, but I also ate pretty sensibly.  I guess it didn’t hurt I spent Saturday through Tuesday with the flu.  I’ll take the loss, all the same.

The treadmill’s set up at home, but I haven’t gotten over the flu enough to give it a go yet.  Soon.  Hopefully tomorrow morning.

This week’s beer adventure.

Here again, I sit at Poor Phil’s, enjoying a fine brew. Aside from the usual staple (Trois Pistoles), I’m enjoying a Lagunitas Censored Copper Ale. It’s a tasty brew. I’m enjoying it on tap, which is the best way (of course) to enjoy any beer that’s not designed to be bottle fermented.

[Digression: On the TV in front of me, ESPN is showing game scores in their "Bottom Line". I just saw a score involving Oral Rob. I think that's a good porn name.]

In any case, ’tis yummy.  A nice mild brew with good hop flavoring and not obnoxiously bitter.  I do recommend giving it a try.

Long overdue Weight Loss Update

Stace | Weight Loss | Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Despite my deciding to get back with the Weight Watchers program in January, I hadn’t been to a meeting since January 17, 2007. Over a month ago. Bad Craig.

Of the four weeks I missed, two were genuine schedule conflicts, and two were me knowing I’d gained and not wanting it to be officially confirmed. This is not a good mindset if you’re going to lose weight.

I should add that my schedule has made it increasingly difficult to go to the gym on a regular basis as well. If I were willing to never car pool, I might make it there a couple of days a week, but at my peak I was going 5 days a week, sometimes more. That’s not attainable, though — not through the gym. So I spent some time thinking about my usage pattern at the gym and decided that since I’m almost 100% on the treadmill these days, if I found a treadmill I liked for home it would solve my problem.

I could get up in the morning, go downstairs and walk for 45-60 minutes, watch the TV while I’m doing it, come up and shower, then go to work. No dealing with crowded locker rooms full of inconsiderate right-wing suburbanites. No dealing with weird showers that have oddly creepy holes cut in them all the time. This can work.

So that’s what I’m doing. I’m canceling the health club membership, and I bought a nice fold-up treadmill.  It should be delivered this Sunday, at which point begins the daily workout regimen. And we’ll start seeing the results soon.

Oh, and to end the suspense, I lost almost 7 pounds over those 5 weeks.  That’ll teach me to be pessimistic.

Cutest. Top. Story. Ever.

The top story on my My Yahoo page is usually something on the important side of the news (excepting The Week That Was Anna Nicole Smith). I loved tonight’s.

Happy Valentines Day!

Every year on Valentines Day I like to reflect on how fitting it is that “romance” rhymes with “pants”.

That is all.

To everyone else, it’s an ostrich.

Lovely Beer find

Stace | Stuff | Thursday, February 1st, 2007

In this week’s excursion to Poor Phil’s, I am sampling their newest cask-conditioned ale. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

I started with the traditional Trois Pistoles which is, IMHO, the finest brew out of Chambly, Quebec’s Unibroue. It’s a strong but fantastic beer. I start heavy and work towards the lighter beers when I come here, since I need to be able to legally get myself home.

After the Trois Pistoles, I want to try something different. In past excursions it has been Smithwick’s (which I’ve had many times in Canada, but I like to encourage US beer sellers to keep it on tap), Rogue Hazelnut Brown (it rocks), and tonight I tried Samuel Adams Winter Lager. I’d tried this previously this past weekend at Zanies in Vernon Hills at a Jake Johannsen show. I liked it then, and I like it now — it’s got a particularly nice flavor that’s complex but not in the least offensive. If you’re willing to try a good beer, I do recommend it. I’ll say this as one who’s not particularly into Samuel Adam Boston Lager, because I’m by no means a hop-head.

Now, that being said, I was converted to a solid fan of cask-conditioned ales when I was in Britain this past Thanksgiving. So when I discovered that Poor Phil’s had cask ales, I was hooked. For the past few visits, the cask-conditioned ale was a Bell’s brew. Good, but as I noted on my first Poor Phil’s entry, a bit hoppy for my tastes… initially.

I still took it upon myself to keep trying this beer, and I’ll be damned if it didn’t grow on me. In fact, by the end, I was quite enamoured with it. So tonight, when I learned the new cask ale was the much-awaited (to me) Two Brothers Cane and Ebel, I was both excited and saddened. While I’d grown quite fond of the Bell’s, and was in fact sad to see it go (never to return), I was elated to be trying a new domestic cask-conditioned ale. I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to Night of the Living Ales.
So here we are, with a Two Brothers Cane and Ebel in hand. It, too, is hoppy — I think I’m going to become a hop head. I quite like it, and will certainly be getting a glass every week until we get to try the next selection.

I love this place.
