Save money by not riding the CTA

One of the nice things about living where I do is that for the first time in my life, we live close enough to the city to use public transportation as a viable means of getting there and back. Our options are typically to either catch a bus near the house, transferring to the L if necessary, or drive to Midway and use the very reasonably priced Park and Ride.

Last night, we were heading into the city for a fun evening. Traffic on 55 northbound was pretty light, so I debated simply driving in, but remembered how little I enjoy dealing with parking in Wrigleyville. So we parked at the Park and Ride, and made our way to the Orange line.

Buying a car

Wish i’d thought of this before I got my car. Then again, I’m not sure how well it would work with a niche model like the VW Jetta TDI Diesel Special Edition.

I love this bar!

Stace | Stuff | Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Okay, that settles it. Poor Phil’s is my favorite bar. The food, in all honesty, is not great, but that’s not what I look for in a bar. However, good beer, good attitude, and general atmosphere is what I look for. And Poor Phil’s has it all.

They have Unibroue on tap. Plus. They have Cask Conditioned, hand-pulled ales. Plus. They are non-smoking. Plus. They pride themselves on a quality tap and bottled beer collection. Plus. Free Wi-Fi, free use of iMacs. Plus.

Simply put, they rock. If you live in Chicagoland, check ‘em out. I mean it.

Totally worth a visit… And more.

BTW, Rogue Hazelnut Brown is, without question, most definitely *not* teh s uck.

Back on the wagon

Stace | Stuff, Weight Loss | Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Consider this a preemptive post. It’s been a month since my last Weight Watcher’s meeting, and a month preceded the previous one. In other words, I’ve been slack going to meetings. That’s not such a bad thing, except it means I’ve been slack in actually moving to lose weight. Without the accountability of the scale, it seems, I’m hopeless.

I didn’t do much in the way of workouts over the Christmas holiday, and much as I intended to while I was in San Francisco, I instead ended up falling into my typical pattern when on business travel at a conference — spending my downtime in the hotel and generally not eating healthy.

Last night at the gym I stepped on the scale, afraid of what I’d see. It wasn’t bad — maybe two pounds since my last weighing. I’m hitting the gym after pool league tonight and then in the morning on the way to work. I may be able to get this into a loss.

But if I don’t, well, now you know why. :)

I’m sitting on a plane, and there’s this couple next to me speaking some foreign language, and it takes all my self control not to utter “That’s some language you got there. And you speak like that 24/7?”
God, I’m a dork.

I sat in the keynote. Well, that’s a lie — I stood in the keynote because I was not fanatical enough to stand in line for more than a half hour. I watched the normal procession of events — Steve Jobs showing increasing sales, growing market share, previewing some new ads (including a PC & Mac guy ad), and then it was on to the products.

Applause

Stace | Stuff | Monday, January 8th, 2007

Who are these people who applaud when the plane lands?
A slight change in my flight plans has me flying through Los Angeles en route to San Francisco. A plane full of people bound for LA is interesting. It’s not quite the same as a plane bound for Las Vegas, but it’s not your typical plane vibe, either. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe it’s that there’s probably someone on this plane who thinks he or she is going to be famous. Or maybe it’s most of them. Hard to say.
In any case, my stop here will be brief. San Francisco flight departs in 30 mins, so there’ll be a dash to the gate, I’m sure.
